About this tool
Check text length and encoded size as separate measurements. Word segmentation follows the current interface language rather than simply splitting on spaces.
How to use
Paste text or open a UTF-8 file. Character counts use visible grapheme clusters, so combining accents and joined emoji are counted as complete characters rather than separate code units.
Word segmentation follows the current language. Blank lines separate paragraphs, and line counts include a trailing empty line. UTF-8 bytes measure encoded size rather than text length. Input limit: 2 MiB.
Common questions
Why is the count different from Word or a submission form?
Platforms may count words, characters, spaces or language-specific units differently. This tool counts graphemes and language-aware words. Follow the destination’s rules when meeting a submission limit.
Why can one character take several bytes?
UTF-8 uses one byte for A and three for €; emoji can use more. A joined emoji may count as one visible character while containing several encoded characters and many bytes.
Why does a final newline add a line?
Line counts include the empty line after the final line break. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines, so a single line break within a paragraph does not create another paragraph.
