How to use
Choose hexadecimal or binary, then edit either side. Each byte uses two hex digits or eight binary digits, with spaces for readability. You can paste byte sequences with or without whitespace.
Text is encoded as UTF-8, so a character may occupy several bytes. Invalid digits, incomplete bytes and invalid UTF-8 are rejected. Use this to inspect text encodings or prepare byte fixtures. Text input is limited to 256 KiB; this tool does not interpret bytes as an integer.
Common questions
Why does one character produce several bytes?
UTF-8 uses variable-length sequences. Each displayed hex pair or eight binary digits represents one byte, not one character. Incomplete bytes and invalid UTF-8 are rejected.
Why does C3 A9 decode but E9 or 0xE9 fail?
C3 A9 is the UTF-8 sequence for é. E9 alone is not valid UTF-8, and 0x prefixes are not accepted here. Enter complete hex pairs or eight-bit binary groups, separated by whitespace if needed. For legacy character encodings, use the text file encoding converter.
