About this tool
Choose the calculation that fits a discount, progress figure or change over time. Percentage change uses the absolute original value, not a percentage-point difference.
How to use
The three calculators work independently. Percentage of a number multiplies the percentage by the total and divides by 100. Share divides the part by the total. Change divides the difference by the absolute original value.
Results update as you type. An error in one card does not affect the others. Share and change cannot use a zero denominator. Results show up to 12 significant digits and are not intended for exact financial bookkeeping.
Common questions
What happens when the original value is zero or negative?
Zero has no valid denominator for percentage change and produces an error. For negative originals, the difference is divided by the original’s absolute value; check that this convention suits your use.
How do I find a 20% discount on 80?
In the percentage-of-value calculator, enter 20 and 80 to get 16, the discount amount. Subtract it from 80 for the final price of 64; the displayed 16 is not the sale price.
Is going from 20% to 25% a 5% increase?
It is 5 percentage points, but a 25% relative increase. Enter new value 25 and original value 20 in the change calculator to get the relative change.
