About this tool
Use entities when tags need to appear as text in a page or document. Escaping here does not replace context-specific handling for JavaScript, CSS or URLs.
How to use
Enter an HTML fragment on the left to turn its special characters into entities. Paste entities such as & or 你 on the right to recover the text.
By default only HTML special characters are escaped. The optional mode also escapes non-ASCII characters. Results are displayed as text and never executed. Decoding handles semicolon-terminated entities and leaves unknown ones unchanged. Input limit: 2 MiB.
Common questions
Why does &lt; become < instead of a less-than sign?
Each conversion decodes one layer. Decode again only after checking the source. Unknown entities remain unchanged, and the tool does not execute decoded tags.
Can I keep accented letters readable?
Yes. The default mode leaves non-ASCII letters intact. The additional Unicode option turns characters such as é into é; decoding accepts recognized entities ending in a semicolon.
