How to use
Select permissions for owner, group and others, or enter an octal value such as 755 or 4755. Expand Special permissions to set setuid, setgid or the sticky bit. The matrix and output stay in sync.
The command example uses file as a placeholder for your target path. This tool calculates permissions only; it does not run commands on the server or decide which permissions are appropriate for a particular file.
Common questions
What do the three digits in 755 mean?
They describe owner, group and others. Read, write and execute contribute 4, 2 and 1 respectively. 755 is rwxr-xr-x; replace file in the command example with your actual target path.
What do s, S, t and T mean in the result?
They show setuid, setgid or sticky bits. Lowercase s or t means the corresponding execute bit is also set; uppercase S or T means it is not. Expand special permissions to inspect them.
Does execute mean the same thing for a directory and a file?
For a directory, execute permits traversal; for a regular file, it permits execution subject to other system rules. The calculator only shows permission bits and does not evaluate ownership, ACLs or the actual target.
